The Appeal
St Mary's fine 3 manual Hill & Sons organ was built in 1876 and enlarged in 1910 and 1960. The Hill family of organ builders were connected with St. Mary's as churchwardens and members of the congregation from the opening of the church in 1873 until the 1950s. Over the years a number of notable musicians have been engaged as organists at St Mary's including Martin Shaw, Geoffrey Shaw, Christopher Herrick, Anthony Greening and John Rutter. Recently an increasing number of stop actions have failed resulting in a very limited range of sounds – and a full overhaul is required. Harrison and Harrison, organ builders of Durham have been engaged to St Mary's with approximately £200,000 of work due to begin in January 2012. When work is completed in summer 2012, St Mary's organ will be fit for at least another 40 years service in full playing order.
