"I've learnt that by making small steps in the use of our ICT we can make a big impact on parental engagement and our learners"

Learner Parent School relationship triangle

In November 2009 Becta hosted a national event in the Midlands for primary schools interested in learning more about how ICT currently available in schools can be exploited to work in partnership with parents and improve parental engagement in their children's learning.

Schools who attended the event were inspired to make greater use of technologies such as emailing, text messaging, blogs, podcasts and learning platforms with parents. Also delegates valued the opportunities provided to share their experiences and successes as well as discuss with other schools what their next steps may be in using ICT to engage parents.

The "Engaging parents through online reporting" conferences on the 26th February in London and the 4th March in Manchester (please register at http://www.eventelephant.com/engagingparentsmanchester) are another opportunity for primary schools who were unable to attend the conference in November 2009, to hear from leading experts and schools who are seeing the impact on their learners of using ICT to improve parental engagement.

Primary schools are not expected to have achieved online reporting until 2012 but should be exploiting ICT to improve parental engagement now.
