Some school staff have a higher duty of care than others by virtue of their training, expertise and responsibilities. Art/Design/Technology, PE and Sport, Outside Activities and Science all come under this heading
This course will enable staff in these departments to consider the policies and practices in their school and determine what developments might be necessary.
The outcome of the course will be that all the delegates will be able to demonstrate due diligence as appropriate.
Recent cases will be explained and discussed. There will be a prolonged opportunity to discuss departmental issues with experts in the field.
The course will cover:
1. Negligence and how to avoid it
2. The Higher Duty of Care: its extent and restrictions
3. Risk Management: how to ensure it is easy and effective
4. A session on specialist area concerns
5. Discussion of good policies and procedures
6. Tools, aids and guidance for managing safe areas
All delegates will be given model policies and procedures, and will be enabled to access regular information that will keep them up-to-date.
Course Directors:
Chris Lowe – lawyer and former Head and Visiting Professor of Educational Law; chair of the Educational Visits Advisory Council; author of numerous books on educational law.
Peter Whitlam – lawyer and former senior lecturer in PE; co-author of Safe Practice in PE and School Sports.
Simon Lowe - Is the Managing Director of Handsam Ltd. He is a member of IOSH and has been involved in the development of Health and Safety online management systems in the educational arena for four years.
