Dr Nicholas Tate - IES
What is Education for?
Nicholas Tate was educated at the universities of Oxford, Bristol and Liverpool. He taught in schools and colleges of education in England and Scotland, and with the Open University, before joining England’s National Curriculum Council in 1989. From 1989 to 2000 he worked for a number of England’s national educational bodies, becoming chief executive successively of the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority (1994-1997) and of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (1997-2000). During the years 1994-2000 he was the chief adviser to England’s Secretary of State for Education on curriculum and assessment matters.
From 2000-2003 he was Headmaster of Winchester College, and from 2003 to 2011 Director-General of the International School of Geneva, Switzerland.
In August 2011 he was appointed executive Chairman of International Education Systems (IES), a network of schools in England, Hungary, South Africa and the United States.
Nicholas Tate was awarded an honorary doctorate of civil law by the University of Huddersfield in 1999 and appointed a CBE in 2001.
