Bristol Concert Orchestra is one of Bristol's largest and most versatile orchestras, playing mainly symphonic and large-scale choral repertoire. In recent years, under the expert direction of Stefan Hofkes, the orchestra has built up an excellent reputation, performing in Bristol's main concert venues with top national and international soloists, attracting critical acclaim.This season will see a new initiative, the BCO family concert, aimed at the young audience and families, as an addition to the normal concert season. They will perform “Peter and the Wolf” with narrator, (performance lasts approximately 25 minutes). Preceding the performance will be an opportunity for the audience to learn about each section of the orchestra. This provides lots of audience participation which the children will love, and after the performance the children will have an opportunity to get closer to the instruments. Although aimed at the younger audience all ages will enjoy the experience of hearing a large concert orchestra perform. This workshop will have your children wide-eyed! www.bco.myby.co.uk.
Rock 'n Roll workshop presented by the "Alligators"

This workshop will take the audience through the history of how Rock 'n Roll started and how different musicians in Britain and America influenced it's development. They will learn how a Rock 'n Roll song is constructed and hear how the different instruments of the band contribute to the sound and rhythm. The Alligators are professional musicians and music educators. They perform regularly at Rock 'n Roll clubs and festivals around the country. Street Dance with Fahrenheit Dance
Fahrenheit have 6 dance schools in the UK and Wales. They have enjoyed success in national and international dance competitions, and are taught by a team of professional dance teachers. Street dance is vibrant and exciting. The open classes are aimed at all ages and abilities, with the opportunity to progress to one of the many dance teams. The local Fahrenheit team are well known in the local community having appeared at the Bradley Stoke Festival over recent years. Their showcase event at St David's Hall, Cardiff was a sell out and received critical acclaim. Participants will be taught the basics of street dance from professional dance teachers. Workshops will start with a warm up. Participants will then be taught a complete routine before a cool down at the end of class. Suitable from age 5 and up and all abilities. Drama for pre-school with Debutots
This workshop will be aimed at children aged between 1-6 years. The session will be an interactive storytelling and dramatic play session. Children and parents will be able to take part in a fun and imaginative drama session. Very young children join in with assistance from parents/carers, and older children will join in with trained early years drama practitioners. The workshop includes lively music, dancing, puppets and storytelling. A Debutots class develops children's natural ability to play imaginatively whilst encouraging communication skills to grow. Debutots Baby Story Play classes are a wonderful opportunity to bond and interact with very young children in a way not experienced before. The exciting and original Debutots stories, leave children in the Early Years Drama Classes wanting more and talking about the loveable characters for days. Puppet workshop with Puppets and Pandemonium This Bristol based Puppetry company make their own puppets and perform shows for festivals, theatres, schools and parties. Alongside the performances they regularly run workshops in puppet building because it's such a fun way to be creative that is open to people of all ages and capabilities. Join them to create you own rod and stick character and be shown a few simple techniques to help bring it to life. Suitable for all ages. www.puppetsandpandemonium.co.uk. Nick Pallett - Acoustic Guitar Nick is lead guitarist in the Alligators who will be providing our rock 'n roll workshop. Originally an acoustic guitarist/singer & songwriter, he has been involved in music since the 1970's. He has worked in theatres, clubs, TV, as a session musician and in the recording studio. It would help if participants for this workshop were able to understand simple music and/or guitar TAB plus a few basic chords. Guitar provided or you are welcome to bring your own along.
South West Winterguard Academy Spintastic
The Academy is a community youth group that offers all young people the opportunity to take part in an instructed activity called "Colourguard". It is a dance based activity using flags and other equipment, to perform a routine to music. In their first year the group have performed at several community shows including the South Gloucestershire Engage Festival. Members of the group known as "cadets" are now competing in the 2011 Winterguard UK competition and have achieved excellent results. Aimed at children age 7 and above participants will be taught some basic dance and equipment moves with a flag with the aim of being able to perform a complete routine to music by the end. The Venue - Abbeywood Community School
This newly built school situated at New Road, Stoke Gifford offers state of the art facilities including a hall with retractable tiered seating that accomodates 300, dance studio and drama studio, together with many other facilities including recording studio. There is plenty of parking immediately behind the school, and an overflow car park near by. Refreshments will be available during the day served from the kiosk. We hope you enjoy your day! Please note that if you book to attend one of our workshops you will need to arrive at least 15 minutes before your workshop commences to register your arrival, otherwise we reserve the right to allocate your place to someone else. In fact if circumstances change and you are unable to come, we would be grateful if you could email us to advise, so your place can be given to someone else.
The ability to play an instrument is not necessary as our orchestra and rock 'n roll workshops are intended to be enjoyed by everyone. However, if booking onto the guitar workshop the knowledge of a couple basic chords is suggested.
You are also advised to check back periodically in case further workshops have been added, or, in the highly unlikely event existing workshops have been withdrawn or revised.
All workshops will run for approximately 45 minutes
