For our 25th Annual International Festival of the Arts, the Gerard Manley Hopkins Festival will be our biggest, most ambitious
and best so far.
Our Programme for July 2012 (21st to 27th) will feature contributors from 22 countries: from Argentina to Japan, from
Germany to Iraq, from USA to UK, from Sweden to Scotland. ‘the most international festival in Ireland’. (Independent).
Selected highlights:
Classical Concert with world famous Swedish pianist, Hans Palsson.
Traditional Irish Music Concert with Frankie Gavin and Michelle Lally.
Lecturers include: Tobias Schlingensiepen (Germany); Geraldine Parsons (Glasgow); Michael Woods (UK);
Deirdre Serjaintson (UK); William Adamson (Germany); Brian Arkins, Patrick Murray, Brendan Stanton, Dennis Sexton
(Ireland); John Hunter (USA); Miho Takahashi (Japan).
International Poetry Sessions: Roger McGough (UK); Salah Niazi (Iraq); Dermot Healy (Ireland); Diarmuid Johnson
(Wales); Desmond Egan, Neil Donnelly (Ireland).
Visual Arts Exhibitions include: Charles Cullen; James Hanley, John Behan, Eva Kelly (Ireland); Fernando Pezzini
(Argentina); Wilhelm Fockersperger (Germany); and some pieces by the late James McKenna.
Field Trips: Visit to Maynooth University with President Philip Nolan and Gala Festival Banquet in Pugin Hall. Guided
Tour of Russell Library with Librarian Penny Woods. Conservation and Nature Celebration. Visit to Traditional Forge
and Guided Introduction to Flora and Fauna of Kildare by conservationist, Michael Jacob.
Parallel Youth Programme unique to the Hopkins Festival with specially geared events, workshops and demonstrations.
